diff_test()
  MATLAB/Octave version 5.2.0
  Test diff(), a built-in function for differences
  and approximate derivatives.

diff_trig_test
  For sin(x) at x values spaced by h,
  compute first, second and third differences,
  divided by appropriate power of h,
  and compare to corresponding derivatives.
