a lecture for a one day workshop on Mathematical Modeling,
at Virginia Tech, 04 May 2013.
The following files were used:
-
backtrack.png,
an illustration of how backtracking would be used to find a solution to the four queens problem.

-
iowa_population.png,
a contour map suggesting the local population density of the state of Iowa.
-
iowa_population.txt,
a population data file for the districting problem, suggested by the Iowa
problem, but using 96 counties and artificial data.
-
knapsack.png,
an illustration of the knapsack problem.

a small collection of 10 valuable paintings.
-
pentominoes.png,
the shapes of the 12 pentominoes made of 5 contigous squares.
-
polyfish_lines.png,
the edges of a 3D polygonal model of the surface of a fish.
-
protein_folding.png,
an illustration of how a protein folds up.
-
prototein.png,
an image of a "prototein", an idealized protein.
