Florida State University 2013

For Spring 2013, you can examine the Spring 2013 Scientific Computing Course Offerings.

From 28 January to 13 February, our department hosted Professor Hyung-Chun Lee, and two of his graduate students, from Ajou University, Suwon, Korea, as well as Irene Monnesland, a graduate student from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. Professor Lee gave a talk and collaborated on research projects. The students attended classes and special presentations, made some research contacts, and were involved in many social and cultural activities as well. You can review their busy schedule.

I attended the fifth annual graduate student miniconference, held at Clemson University on 08-09 February 2013, along with a group of FSU students, postdocs, and visitors.

I visited Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, at the invitation of one of our former research group members, Hoa Nguyen, 20-21 February 2013, and gave a colloquium talk on Gridding the Earth for Climate Models, and a talk to the undergraduates on Genetic Algorithms.

For six class sessions, February 26th through 21 March 2013, I presented a series of talks to the FSU class on Numerical Methods for Stochastic Differential Equations, called "Approximating Integrals for Stochastic Problems".

I accompanied a group from FSU to the SIAM SEAS conference (South Eastern Atlantic Section), held at Oak Ridge National Lab and the University of Tennesse, Knoxville, Tennessee, 22-24 March 2013.

I visited Auburn University in 25-26 April 2013, at the invitation of Professor Yanzhao Cao.

I visited Oak Ridge National Laboratory 11-14 June 2013, and the Missouri University of Science and Technology at Rolla, Missouri, 14-17 June 2013.

I attended the SIAM Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, 8-12 July 2013 and presented "A Hyperspherical Method for Discontinuity Location in Uncertainty Quantification".

I visited Oak Ridge National Laboratory 22 July through 02 August 2013, to check on three of our graduate students who were performing internships there, to collaborate with researchers.

I visited Korea, 11-24 August 2013. I presented talks at Ajou University in Suwon, Korea, on Investigating Uncertain Parameters in the Burgers Equation, and on Genetic Algorithms, and on "Sparse Grid Collocation for Uncertainty Quantification". At a Finite Element Workshop at a resort in Cheongpyeong, I presented a talk on Gridding the Earth for Climate Models. I also attended a Mathematical Biology Conference on Jeju Island.

The FSU Fall semester began 26 August 2013.

You can examine the Fall 2013 Scientific Computing Course Offerings.

I assisted professor Janet Peterson in the course "Computational Methods for Continuous Problems", ISC4232-01/ISC5935-03, presenting material on two point boundary value problems.

I assisted professor Michael Navon in the course "Applied Computational Science II", ISC5316-01, presenting material on parallel programming with OpenMP and MPI.

I visited Auburn University on 8/9 November 2013, hosted by Professor Yanzhao Cao.

I visited Tulane University on 11/13 November 2013, hosted by Professor Mac Hyman, presenting a talk on "Finite Elements for the (Navier) Stokes Equations".
