Description
With the support of Florida Department of Environmental Protection, this software is developed to simulate nitrogen transformation and transport
in vadose zone. The software is developed using the Python programming language and based on a simpfied model that simulates (1) one-dimensional (1-D) unsaturated, steady-state flow in the vertical direction,
(2) nitrification process for transformation of ammonium (representing total nitrogen) to nitrate and denitrification process for transformation of nitrate to nitrogen gas, and
(3) coupled, steady-state transport of ammonium and nitrate. The end-product of this model is vertical profiles of ammonium and nitrate. The software can be used for
the following modeling scenarios: (1) a single septic system with homogeneous model parameters, (2) multiple septic systems with homogeneous parameters,
(3) multiple septic systems with heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity and porosity (other parameters being homogeneous), and (4) multiple septic systems with
heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity, porosity, and depth to water table (other parameters being homogeneous). Running VZMOD for the latter three modeling scenarios
requires input files of ArcGIS 10 format; installation of ArcGIS 10 is also required, because VZMOD uses spatial analysis functions of ArcGIS 10 to handle spatial variability of
septic systems and model parameters. Preparing the ArcGIS files can be facilitated by using ArcNLET software
developed to simulate nitrate transport in groundwater. On the other hand, the nitrate concentrations at water table simulated by VZMOD can be directly used as the source plane concentrations
of ArcNLET. In this sense, VZMOD can be used as a pre-processor of ArcNLET. Although VZMOD is developed for modeling septic systems, it can be used to simulate nitrogen transformation and transport
of other nitrogen sources like agriculture use.
