Simulating Greenland's Future

I gave a talk at 3pm, 08 April 2011, to the Graduate Student Seminar at the FSU Department of Scientific Computing. The talk was titled

The following files were used for the presentation:

• arolla_velocity.png, a contour plot of down-slope velocity for a test case involving the Arolla glacier, as computed by Mauro Perego's code;
• calving.png, an image of a block of ice "calving" from an ice sheet into the ocean;
• conforming_grid.png, an example of how grids can be refined near a land/ocean interface so that results computed over one region can be accurately copied and used in the other;
• conforming_grid2.png, an example of how grids can be refined near a land/ocean interface so that results computed over one region can be accurately copied and used in the other;
• fsu_2011_grad_seminar.tex, the main LaTeX file;
• ghost_cells.png, an image suggesting how "ghost cells" are used to allow a finite difference mesh to be divided into submeshed and processed in parallel
• greenland_cvt.png, an image of a mesh of Greenland generated using centroidal Voronoi tessellation graded by observed ice sheet velocity.
• greenland_ice_thickness.png, an image of the ice thickness in Greenland.
• greenland_map.png, a map of Greenland showing the many tourist locations.
• greenland_mesh.png, an image of a part of a mesh of Greenland.
• greenland_outline.png, an outline map of Greenland.
• greenland_velocity.png, an image of the observed ice sheet velocity over Greenland.
• ice_springs.png, an image of meltwater pouring off an ice sheet and into the ocean.
• mpas_clouds.png, an image suggesting the MPAS gridding system.
• normalization.png, a schematic of how the ice sheet is "flattened" in the Z direction so that the model ice sheet has a uniform thickness of 1 unit.
• prism_tets.png, an image of a triangular prism decomposed into three tetrahedrons.
• sc_logo.pdf, a PDF image of the logo for the FSU Department of Scientific Computing.
• sia_versus_fo.png, an image comparing results for Greenland using the shallow ice approximation versus the first order model, both computed by Mauro Perego's code.
• staggered_grid.png, an image of the staggered grid used over each ice sheet layer, in the finite volume approach.
• surface_melt.png, an image of streams of surface meltwater running across the ice sheet.
• triangular_prism.png, an image of a triangular prism.
• triangular_prism_grid.png, an image of a grid made from triangular prisms.
• velocity_closeup.png, an image of a portion of the velocity field for Greenland, as computed by Mauro Perego's code.
