Fast Programs for Big Problems

These slides were used for a presentation to students in the Department of Mathematics at Ajou University in Suwon, Korea, 27/29 September 2011. My host was Professor Hyung-Chun Lee.

• array1.m, a MATLAB script that fills an array with values using two FOR loops.
• array1_first.m, a MATLAB script that measures and plots the time required to fill arrays of increasing size.
• array1_first.png, graphs the execution time for the ARRAY1 program, run once.
• array1_second.png, graphs the execution time for the ARRAY1 program, run a second time.
• array1_twice.m, a MATLAB script that measures and plots the time required to fill arrays of increasing size, carrying out the operations twice.

• ell3_edges.txt, a text file listing the pair of nodes forming a side of each triangle (in ascending order), and the index of the triangle, for the ELL3 triangulation. This file can be analyzed to determine the triangles that are neighbors of a given triangle.
• ell3_element_neighbors.txt, the list of neighbors of each triangle in the ELL3 triangulation, produced by the TRIANGULATION_TRIANGLE_NEIGHBORS program.
• ell3_elements.txt, the list of nodes that form each triangle in the ELL3 triangulation.
• ell3_nodes.png, a PNG image of the nodes in the ELL3 triangulation.
• ell3_nodes.txt, the coordinates of the nodes in the ELL3 triangulation.

• linpack_bench.m, a MATLAB version of the LINPACK benchmark.

• matlab_bench.png, an image of the report from MATLAB's BENCH command, which compares your computer's performance on a set of standard calculations, to the performances of other commonly used workstations.
• md.m, a copy of the MATLAB program MD used in some of the discussions.
