Virginia Tech
The Second Time Around

From August 2007, I have worked (for a second time) at Virginia Tech, this time as a research programmer.

My formal position is with the Advanced Research Computing facility, which is responsible for, among other things, the central computing systems that support research programming using OpenMP and MPI.

I also spend time collaborating with researchers at the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics (ICAM)

From April through July 2008, there was a biomathematics REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program sponsored by ICAM and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute. You can see the PDF flyer for the program.

From 08 June to 10 June 2008, I was an instructor for a 3 day class on parallel computing sponsored by the Faculty Development Institute. You can also refer to my working notes and information.

From 28 July to 02 August 2008, I was an instructor for the High Performance Parallel Computing Bootcamp jointly sponsored by Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. You can also refer to my working notes and information.

From 09 September to 22 September 2008, I was a visiting lecturer for the Advanced Computational Science II class, given at the Department of Scientific Computing at Florida State University. You can refer to the OpenMP information or the MPI information

On 21 October 2008, I assisted in Lizette Zietsman's mathematical modeling seminar, MATH 4974. I made a MATLAB version of continuation software, available as TEST_CON, and prepared some background material and an assignment on bifurcation, in conjunction with a lecture by Jim Fink, a professor from Gettysburg College.

Starting in Virginia Tech's Fall 2008 semester, I have been involved as the mentor for a project which allows undergraduate students to work on specific projects in parallel computing on System X.

From 26 January 2009 to 05 May 2009, (Virginia Tech's spring 2009 semester), I supervised a directed study course in Computational Science. (Access to this web page has been disabled, since the course is being offered again.)

From 03 February 2009 to 05 May 2009, I hosted a local broadcast of Oklahoma University's weekly Internet workshop Supercomputing in Plain English, 2009.
You may want to refer to slides from the previous version of this workshop, Supercomputing in Plain English, 2007.

Over 20-21 February 2009, I managed the Clemson/Pitt/UTK/VT graduate/post graduate SIAM Student conference, which was sponsored by the SIAM Student Chapter at Virginia Tech, by the Virginia Tech Mathematics Department, and by the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Mathematics (ICAM). At this conference, 17 graduate students presented short lectures on their work. Nine of the presenters traveled here from other universities with their advisers.

In March 2009, with Gene Cliff and Michael Snow, I devised and ran programs to benchmark the performance of parallel Matlab on a prototype of a proposed new computer system. The computer system was accepted, delivered at the end of May 2009, and will be open to the public by October 2009 under the name Ithaca.

From 07 May to 13 May 2009, I visited Ajou University in Suwon, Korea, and gave a series of lectures. The slides for these talks are available on my presentations page.

From 26 May to 28 May 2009, I was an instructor for a 3 day class on "Using Virginia Tech High Performance Computing", sponsored by the Faculty Development Institute. You can refer to my working notes and information.

From 20 July to 24 July 2009, I visited Sandia National Laboratories, and gave a talk on sparse grid research computing I am doing, called "Accuracy, Precision and Efficiency in Sparse Grids".

During Virginia Tech's Fall 2009 semester, I assisted Jeff Borggaard in the course Math/CS 4414, Issues in Scientific Computing, 12:20-1:10, MWF, McBryde 329. I gave talks on

On 8 September 2009, I and Gene Cliff presented a class, with the cooperation of the Faculty Development Institute, called "Introduction to Parallel MATLAB at Virginia Tech". You can refer to the slides for the presentation.

On 17-18 September 2009, I attended a MathWorks training session on "Parallel Computing with MATLAB".

From 3 October to 12 October 2009, I visited Florida State University, where I gave a talk on Sparse Grids for Stochastic PDE's.

On 10 November 2009, I gave a 45 minute presentation on Voronoi diagrams to visitors from Hollins College. You can refer to the slides for the presentation.

During Virginia Tech's Spring 2009 semester, I plan to assist Traian Iliescu in the course Math 6426, Mathematical Modeling of Atmospheric and Oceanic Flows.

On 8 February 2010, Gene Cliff and I will present a class, with the cooperation of the Faculty Development Institute, called "Introduction to Parallel MATLAB at Virginia Tech". You can refer to the slides for the presentation.
